Cast iron exhaust manifold cracked on my Bedford Green Goddess - happens on these engines I'm told. 6 cylinder running a dizzy compression of 6:1...could probably wrap a kitchen towel around it! However, cost of secondhand one .....£510 incl gaskets (the original never used gaskets!!) I bought a tin of heat stuff to repair a cast manifold as removing the manifold will need to wait until I find a tin opener to open the can of worms.
And to think I sold a RAV4 3 door for £600...should have kept it!
Welding cast ? Any ideas? If I could fix my own, I could sell the one I've just bought at a profit as it seems to be one of the last remaining spares!!

All depends how bad and where the crack is it is but usual method is to 'stitch' it. Welding cast iron isn't usually an option. Here's an example from one company of what can be done: LINK

Have you a photo of where the crack is on the manifold Bothy? Welding CI is quite possible if the correct procedure is used. It may well need the face of the manifold skimming after welding but again, that is not a problem.

My experience from my motor trade days,(mainly Ford Fiesta and pinto manifolds). yes you can weld cast iron but the crack needs to be Vee’d out deeply and do it on the engine so the manifold doesn’t distort while you weld it. If you weld it off the vehicle is will distort and never seal back on the head . If it has to come off vehicle to be welded, bolt it to solid metal like an beam..then weld..might not be textbook but it worked for me 👍🏻

Have to say I welded the son's Ford diesel manifold just before it went into the turbo, he ran it for 6 months after that before he sold it, no idea how much longer after that it survived. If it's scrap anyway & easy to get off/on got to be worth a go, if it fails you've only lost a bit of time.

I'll get a pic this weekend...been resting following a fight with a step ladder whilst opening it out. Thing whacked me on the side of the head - didn't knock any sense into me but left me with a lump and concussion. lol.

Well....ventured into the cab yesterday....without using the wee set of steps I have to get up! managed to take 3 shots of the mainfold...having seen it from the drivers seat before, I didn't think it was too bad, but from the passenger seat....wow. Must be cracked almost all round. Almost impossible to see from down below, but here's the pics I took. I think I'll try getting the cracked one welded, and before fitting the acquired secondhand one, use it to make a template so that I have the option of getting a stainless steel one made in future if the lottery comes up! Looking at the cracked manifold, it seems that they were fitted without a gasket and I wonder how the cast copes with the heat expansion of the engine block vs the manifold vs the aluminium inlet manifold.

The pics are taken by my mobile phone, whilst hanging upside down in the cab. I have loaded them onto IMGbb but need to try harder to link to this forum! I've only read the instructions Hoovie posted 3 times. Mental block so off to Tesco to de-stress!!

And I should add the driveway was re-done 3 years ago using tons of type 1 foundation and the blocks are commercial grade - much thicker than normal. The beast is 5 tons unladen (ie water tank empty). I sit it on scaffold planks to spread the weight.

Many years ago there was a chap at work who not only owned an old fire appliance but also had a uniform made. Of course he didn't get a ordinary fireman's he got an officers one. He also used to go to fires in this uniform!!! He got a tremendous bol***** from the Police and was warned that if he did it again he would be arrested. Being arrested wouldn't have been a good idea and could have resulted in unemployment depending of the outcome if found guilty in a Court of Law.

Great stuff. What made you want/go for one?? Just out of curiosity.
Does all the stuff still work. They're a bit before my time, but the old man tells me they were designed as a self propelled pump, rather than a fire engine, to pump water to cities after a russian air strike during the cold war.
