My 2003 van, with around 145k KMs is overdue for its service.
I say "overdue" - it was last service in October 2017, so over 2 years ago, but since then has done less then 10,000 KMs (6k miles) so very little really in that 2 years. I have been planning to do the oil change for ages now but never got round to it.
So the question is that between now and next spring I would be surprised if I do more than 500 miles, so wondering if it would make more sense to wait until the 'new' season next year to do the service so there will be fresh oil and filter for when the use proper will start again; or should it be done ASAP as overdue and have fresh oil sitting in the block over the weekend?
Thoughts please?

If the trips are short change the oil at least. Gives the engine a better chance IF emulsification takes place.

Agree with Charlie. I have always changed oil and filter by time even if mileage was low. Oil degrades much faster than folk realise. It may look fine when drained but it loses essential functionality as it ages.

Oil is the lifeblood of an engine so regardless of mileage a once a year oil/filter change makes the best sense 👍🏻👍🏻
