Anyone have any thoughts on one of THESE if it would be safe to use in the Rav? Always weary of anything lecrical used in a car  Mrs P has the dash cam in the existing one and when we go travelling aboot we also use it to plug the phone in for the maps, using a usb adaptor so need the two outlets now and again.

There's no fundamental reason why you shouldn't use a splitter / USB power adaptor provided that there is sufficient space around the accessory socket to fit one in. But the one you link to looks way too cheap and doesn't boast any safety features at all! Compare with this one (on Amazon) and the level of safety features it boasts ... Note: I'm not recommending that one either - just using it as an example of the potential overload and safety features that you may want to look for.

I have one fitted in the outlet I installed in the boot of ours. It's one of the type with a coiled power lead and the box with USB and traditional round sockets is then velcro'd to the side of the boot. I have done the same in the front of the cockpit by velcroing the box to the side of the trans tunnel. Gets it out of the way so it doesn't clutter up the console.

phaeton - 1- I haven't a clue how to and 2- I was also told it was best to use the cigarette lighter as you can unplug it when not used otherwise it's a drain on the battery??

Paul the hardwire kit is really simple. It’s a lot easier and it won’t drain your battery. It switches on and off with the ignition. If I was able to get under I could’ve done it myself but my neighbour did it in less than 15 mins

You should be okay with a hard-wired connection as the unit will switch off with the ignition.I just have our dashcam plugged into the front cig socket and then routed up the back of the dash & glovebox simply because I couldn't be bothered to hard-wire it.

Cheers Jim, I presume you have the same in the front but attached to the side of the consul which is where i'd have to fit ours.

Hi Paul, I don't have one in the front at the moment as I have no need of extra sockets. The dashcam is plugged into the normal cig lighter and the other socket on the console is used occasionally for sat nav, etc.

I fitted this one myself earlier this year. The wiring for it is already in the car, taped along the loom behind that rectangular panel on the wheelarch trim in the boot.

Oh ok Jim I thought there was a 12v socket in the later Ravs well the upgraded 4.2s.
