This weekend our dashboard has decided to send us a message , it reads check 4x4 system. when we turn the key it reads vsc 4x4 and the warning lights for diff lock, skid, etc illuminate then go off as it should. All fine for a while, then not sure it is distance related or time at over 50 mph , the warning triangle a bleep and this message appears ....on constant until we switch off. Then back to normal for ...as above. Weather related as in the rain , last weekend was worse, so have to say no. We have just has 2 new cross climate tyres fitted at the front, but the cheap and nasty jumaji are still on the rear for now.
Any thoughts. The handbook obviously just says take to 4x4 dealer or Toyota.

Fossie, would you please fill in some details of your RAV in your profile. That way, anyone who can help or may have suggestions will know what model you are asking about :TU:

As it's a petrol it's more likely to be related to a wheel speed sensor fault I would think. Can you get any fault codes read? Other, more informed members should be along soon. Let's see what they say.

Not sure if it applies to the 4.3 but on many 4x4 drivetrains a significant difference in circumference of the tyres can cause EML warnings. I am thinking that your new fronts will have max tread depth and the rears will be pretty worn? Could that be the cause of the problem?

Aye bigkev these tyres will be moved on next month when funds allow. Spoke to Toyota today , who said ......not had that before and to be fair if you brought it in when switched off it may not hold the code. Which is honesty.
I mentioned that it didn't happen this morning as my missus went to work at 0430......(frosty) but did on the way home at 1230. Could it be heat related .? So could it be transfer box and axle oils....old or low? I have had the motor for 3 months and it has 78000 miles on it now ...it came with service history but I did an oil and filter change but didn't do the hypoiod oils.

Nah.......but good idea to change gearbox, tranny box, and rear diff oils on a car like yours anyway. Showed some Inglanders on here how to change wife’s when they were up......resulted in a much quieter car with improved gear change.

Just a quick update.....no real solution! The message still appears at random moments, not any certain distance or speed. So we took to the local garage to use the diagnostics ......it showed battery degrading, though it starts and runs fine even in this weather.......however when We checked it , it is a 45ah battery which is a tad small.
The mechanic did check underneath etc and found he stone guards on the front wheels rotten and bent , so he repositioned them in case debris is affecting the speed sensor.

Is it just "Check 4x4?" or are there other messages with it, like "Check ABS"? "Check VSC"?
One classic on this generation of 4.3, for this reported fault, are faulty switches on the brake pedal. Quite a few cases have been reported. A clue is whether the message is co-incident with you starting to brake or decel (It won't occur on every brake application).
Generally, the dash messages aren't too useful. The same string of messages will occur for many different faults. You need the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) read out of the ECU(s). Not sure about Toyota comments above. Yes, many DTCs (but not all) operate on a "leaky bucket" type arrangement. i.e. they will clear if the fault does not occur within several ignition cycles, but I would have thought there's a good chance something should be stored.

Thanks for Imput ....again on her way to work at 0430 in the frost etc no warning message .....then on way home at 1200 the message came on at the place as before . The journey is a mirror image of itself. The usual check list is carried and vsc , etc is ok . The brake switch is an interesting thought.
I have also thought that seeing as the 4x4 system cuts out at about 25 mph then is monitored and when needed engages using electrical impulses to activate the rear axle again , the smaller battery could be the offender , but it has been on the car since we bought it about 2months and 3000 miles ago. With nothing noting until we put new tyres on as said.

I recommend you read the DTCs. Maybe you can start by reading the 4WD ECU DTCs. A capable reader (not a basic powertrain only one) should read everything, though. If you don't have a capable reader or you don't want to pay somebody to do it, if you are brave and/or skilful enough, in theory 4WD ECU DTCs can be read without a reader, by shorting together pins 4 and 13 on DLC3 (the diagnostic connector). DLC3 is located where RHD driver's right knee would be. DLC3 is a standard diag connector. The DLC3 pinout can be found by searching the web. The DTCs should then be displayed on the instrument pack display. All this information can be found on www.toyota-tech.eu/by registering and paying a few euros. The whole system is also dependant on things like yaw rate sensor and steering angle sensors having been through a calibration routine. This *might* need redoing, it something like a battery disconnect has been done (but don't get hung up on the battery). If the system detects something like conflicting sensor data, it may well throw a DTCs. It can throw DTCs due to supply interruption, CAN comms failure, throttle pot malfunction.....blah, blah. Read the DTCs. They may not tell you exactly what is wrong, but, if there are any present, they will be a clue as to what is wrong, rather than stabbing in the dark.
