OK, just bouncing some ideas here for comment please
Situation
Renault Clio fitted with 195/50R16 88V Tyres. Car is 2010 and still wearing orginal tyres - Continentals.
Car passed MOT last week but had an advisory on all tyres - each one has "....slightly damaged/cracking or perishing" report. Given age of car, not surprising.
So owner wants new tyres. Car is in Glasgow and only used locally.
Quandary
The car does under 1,000 per year, so no requirement for tyres to have a good life on terms of tread.
Owner wants a quality tyre so a recognised brand name, but given the amount of use it doesn't really make sense to go super-premium. Don't want to consider a slightly different size to open up wider options.
I am thinking given the amount of use, it may well make sense to go Winter Tyres and just use them all year round? Safer in the winter and the potential high wear rate in the summer will be an irrelavence (I don't think Winter Tyres in the Summer have any other detriment other than wear?)
Any thoughts on running Winters all-year round?
Winter Tyres in the 195/50R16 size seem to be limited to higher-end tyres only (but as said, don't want budget brand anyway).
They also seem to be an extra £10 or so more than the same brand as a summer-only tyre - worth the extra for a Winter Tyre? I am thinking it is but would be interested in others opinions.
Found so far
I have found 2 Winter Tyres of the right fitment:
Yokahama, £94 - www.justtyres.co.uk/t1064879/yokohama-195-50-r16-88v-v902
or keeping Contis but a Winter version
Continental Winter Contact, £110 - www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/search/details/continental/continental-ts830-p/t1001985
Or
Normal Summer Tyres, these look a reasonable balance between price and a recognisable brand:
Firestone, £83 - www.justtyres.co.uk/t1077252/firestone-195-50-r16-88v-roadhawk
or keeping with the current brand:
Continental, £93 - www.justtyres.co.uk/t909805/continental-195-50-r16-88v-premium-contact-2
or ... going Michelin on a special deal
Michelin Primacy 3, £99 on a deal - www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/search/details/michelin/michelin-primacy-3/t1014511Michelin Primacy 3
Costco are doing the same Michelins at the same price. I would have liked to check out the Cross-Climates but they don't seem to have that size available
Thoughts on Winter vs Summer? Contis vs Michelin, etc?
