I have been advised by my dealer that the brake pads are getting a bit low on my RAV4. Looking on line at the fixed price servicing its £280 to replace just the pads (4wheels). I can do these myself quite easily but the car is still under extended warranty till next April and I am extending it again when it runs out. If I replace the pads myself will it affect my warranty.

Anchorman changed my front discs and pads and I have since changed front discs and pads again and also rear pads and discs for Pagid parts. Never mentioned at any time whilst being serviced during extended warranty period.

I can do these myself quite easily but the car is still under extended warranty till next April and I am extending it again when it runs out. If I replace the pads myself will it affect my warranty. Toyota Extended Warranty doesn't cover wearing components such as the brake pads - so it's up to you (and me) to deal with worn brake pads and whether you have Mr T deal with it, get a third-party garage to change them or do it yourself is entirely up to you - the warranty won't be affected. Brake disks are a different matter - these are protected parts covered by the warranty. The extended warranty also covers the costs of two MoT tests (carried out by Mr T I believe) and the costs of rectifying an MoT failure due to wear/failure of any protected part. So, if the discs need changing you are best off getting Mr T to do so under warranty ... Edit: Also, I just spotted the clause "Provided that in each case the part to be replaced is a genuine Toyota part" - so, replacing a part that is protected by the warranty with other than a Toyota part will 'invalidate' that particular item from cover. Pads aren't covered in the first place so you have a free choice; disks would be ...

I believe discs are only covered for failure resulting from a manufacturing defect - not wear.

I believe discs are only covered for failure resulting from a manufacturing defect - not wear. I believe that is correct - none of the protected parts are protected against normal wear and tear or accidental damage etc. The challenge will always be to determine where "manufacturing defect" ends and "normal wear and tear" begins ...

Thank you all for your reply’s.
I had a look this morning and the disks look ok so I will get some Toyota pads and fit them myself. I did both pads and disks on my previous RAV.
