My brother has a 63 plate invincible with the 2.0 litre diesel. It’s started showing a message on the screen in the middle of the dash. The message says “Please insert correct media storage”. It does this intermittently and he has to stop and switch off to clear it. When it displays this the reversing camera doesn’t work and the radio controls don’t work. It doesn’t have SAT NAV
He has tried disconnecting the battery for 10 mins or so but it has not made any difference. He has been down to the Toyota dealer who want approx £200 + VAT to diagnose and fix.
Does anyone have a cheaper fix ?

Some thoughts: CD - I assume it has a CD slot? I really, really doubt the message is related to the CD, but there's often an internal switch built into the CD cradle, which is used to detect a CD insertion. Tiny possibility it's related to that (stuck switch), but I suspect not. USB - (oh gawd, technical stuff alert). A USB devices uses pull-up resistors on the USB data lines, to indicate its comms speed. That pull-up action is also used by the USB host (in this situation the head unit) to detect something has been inserted into the USB slot. See "Speed Identification" halfway down the page, here: www.beyondlogic.org/usbnutshell/usb2.shtmlPossibly, a short to supply on one of the USB data lines, would make the head unit think something had been inserted, but the head unit would get no response when it tried to communicate. That error message is not an unreasonable result, for such a fault. The USB port also carries a 5V supply. *Possibly* (it's a long shot), there's a short on one of those USB data lines to that 5V supply. Have a look inside the USB socket for a start. Any small metallic particles floating around in there? You might also want to try disconnecting the USB connection at the back of the head unit and see if the problem stops. If I remember correctly, it's a thicker, multicore grey lead, but I could be wrong. On the face of it, sounds more like an internal PCB fault I'm afraid (component, dry joint, possibly corrupt flash, faulty RAM), so unless you have electronic design/diagnostic skills, it's not going to be a "cheap" fix. Looks like others have seen a similar fault: www.toyotanation.com/threads/please-insert-correct-storage-media-audio-problem.582681/There, the dealer wouldn't mess about (and they wouldn't have the knowledge to do a detailed head unit investigation anyway). They'd just change the head unit.

Thanks shcm for your comprehensive reply. My brother is a builder so don’t think he will be taking it apart. The dealer wants £48 +vat to diagnose and £200 + vat to fix. Sounds like they know what the problem is already. Regards
