hello all im buying a 2006 RAV4 98000 miles 4x4. FSH most main dealer. Engine 2AD T180 D-4D. All over in good condition. Leather is excellent condition and all electrics working. VSR light is on but that will be dealt with by main dealer before I commit to purchase. as I’m new to Toyota is there anything I should be aware of. I know there’s an oil consumption issue but is there any nasty surprises I should expect. I apologise if this question has been asked before. If there’s a part of the forum where this query has been raised I’d appreciate being pointed in the right directions. Thanks in advance.

The T180 is a fabulous car but if it hasn’t had its engine changed it’s way to risky. Sorry it’s just the way it is.
Greetings by the way. 👍👍👍

to the club Banjo Make sure you do due diligence with regard to that engine - Toyota will know if it has been changed. If it hasn't, get them to give you a loooong warranty just in case. If they won't, walk away as Charlie says above.

Welcome Banjo min......read ye well the forewenting commentaries.......T180 a superb car, but similar to Scotland’s national football team manager, it can be a thankless and poison chalice. Just ask the dealer outright if the engine has been changed. If YES, buy it with the LOOOOONG warranty. If NOT, haggle like Friar Tuck, then get a LOOONG warranty. Mechanic on here until recently had two ffs........I would HAVE (not OF....) bought either from him, but they CAN be problematical, mpg is, technically speaking, utter pish, but fuelled properly and maintained betterly, they are superb cars. Good luck min........

Martin......nurra wee fing to check.......urgentfully.......does this car also STILL have its (fitted as standard utterly pish and a far king rip off) RUNFLAT TYRES fitted......? Find out asap and get back to us and we will talk ye through how this is ALSO a bartering point with the dealer, and what you should (must) do to get them aff yer proposed new car and in the bliddy bin. I say MUST be removed coz by this time imho they are pretty much time barred more than anything.
The tyres would be Bridgestone (Latin for bastard cheats, noisy, and crap in the wet.....) and have a wee double circular logo on their walls signifying they are indeed Runrats......
Please bear in mind.......these are SUPERB cars.......just checks must be done or you would be better buying sweeties with yer money......lol. At least you have asked the question before a leap of unguided faith.......I had the SR180......same car/engine, less toys. Loved it........faultless apart from Runrats and brake pads shedding shuch (Scotteesh for shit....) on to discs.

Hi Martin, the "oil consumption issue" only seemed to affect a few cars and those that were reported to Toyota were dealt with very effectively by fitting a new half-engine. I'm still running my 2008 XT5 ( now 88k miles ) which had the engine changed at 32k miles and out of warranty by my dealer. Something in your description of the car is ringing a bit of a bell with me as I believe that the T180 engine was only introduced for the 2.2L, 4.3 model half way through 2007, though more knowledgeable guys on here will need to confirm this. And a big welcome to the club!

Nearly ... according to Parkers, the T180 was available between February 2006 and March 2008. The SR180 'replaced' it being available from July 2008 to November 2008 - I bought mine 'new' in February 2009. I'm not at all sure that I'm 'more knowledgeable' but I did look it up!

Many thanks for the welcome and comments. Am I right in thinking that Toyota replaced all of the top ends in the T180 in some sort of recall? Or was it only a small number of T180 engines affected? There is scant paperwork with the car so I rang the earlier main dealers to request information about the engine. Not much joy as they claim such info cannot be accessed anymore. I

You probably ought to have a read of CharlieFarlies guide to the 2.2 Diesel 2AD series engine ... There was no recall. We don't know how many cars were affected but it's probably safe to assume that it was a 'small' number though, as time passes and these cars get older, there is probably an increasing likelihood of expensive failure - we don't really know for sure but it is a risk you should be aware of. At the time, Toyota supplied replacement ¾ engines as part of a "goodwill warranty" but that has long expired and funding your own ¾ engine would be prohibitively expensive in comparison to the current market value of the car. Sorry ...

I Unadulterated pish, Martin......get the VIN either off them or off the bliddy car and we will call in some f@vours to see if engine changed. Never been quantified, but it was MORE than a “small number”affected, and NO......all top ends were not replaced......only ones who got fixed were the ones who learned from some of US there was a problem. First they were rebuilt at Toyota dealers, who were crap at it and some went wrong, AGAIN. Then replacement engines came from That Japan. Your dealer can access the info., or I will try Arnie’s in Glesga.

Thanks for the replies and advice on this matter. I finally spoke to the main dealers who had this car over the years. None have replaced the engine and one of them checked a ‘main system’ and saw nothing to do with an engine change. The Brighton dealer confirmed that the head gasket and injectors were replaced FOC by Toyota in 2016 so as these are symptoms of the engine problem I walked away from the car. i shall carry on looking for a car but now am clued up on what to look for. Many thanks again.
