I have recently purchased a 2007 XT5 2.2 Diesel with the keyless start to ferry my dogs around.
On purchase I knew the keyless start didn't work. When you try to start it, it displays key not detected, but place key against button it will start and drive normally.
This is not an intermittend thing, it happens all the time.
Now I have read many threads on this and know about radio interference and dead batteries, I have discounted the radio interference as my other XT5 works on the drive. I have replaced the batteries in both fobs, to no avail.
Both fobs will lock and unlock the doors normally.
Does ayone know what the problem could be please?
Thaks in advance
Craig

When you approach the car does the interior light come on?

Weird, sorry if you have changed the batteries, then I'm all out of ideas, I know ours goes weird every now & again, I just put it down to some form of interference, but if it's happening every time no matter where you are.

Yes, it happens every time, no matter where I am. Don't get me wrong I can live with it, its no harder than putting a key in the ignition, but it would be nice if it worked. I was just curious if anyone knew what the problem was. Thanks for you replies

Just a suggestion, not sure, but at least on later models you can enable or disable this from the setup menu. I think there are a few sensors in the car and it is unlikely that all are faulty - so it kooks ti me as if this function is disabled (especially as light goes on when you are near the car.

To detect that the key is inside the vehicle, the system needs to receive a "reply" message from the key, when it is "pinged" from one of the internal antennas. Without going into the physics, the "ping" from the vehicle is short range. (For those that can understand, it's more induction field than radiated field - inverse cube law not square). What you describe is consistent with either: 1. One of the internal antennas being disconnected. 2. One of the internal antennas being faulty. 3. One of the drives to the internal antenna being faulty. If I remember correctly there are internal antennas: 1. Under the rear trim - between the rear seats and the boot. The rear boot well box and all associated trim has to come out. 2. Under the front cubby box. It's most likely the cubby box antenna is at fault, as it's mostly likely this is the one involved with detecting the key. It's closest. Unscrew the cubby box and maybe take it out (like you would for handbrake adjustment) and look for a narrow rectangular thing (maybe about 3 inches by 1/2 inch) with a connector on. If I remember correctly that's roughly what the antenna looks like, but I can't remember its exact location around there. With any luck, it's just disconnected.
EDIT:
Actually, I think I do remember where it is - rear of cubby box. just gently pry the rear cover off. It should be obvious.

Thanks very much for your replies. I will look at the cubby box tomorrow.
That may make a bit of sense, as the wing mirror control is upside down.
So it would suggest someone has been in there before for some reason
Again thanks for your replies

cubbybox by sh cm, on Flickr Console rear end panel. It's easier than the whole cubby box/centre console and the antenna I think is attached to the end panel itself. 6 clips. 3 each vertical side. Top, middle, bottom.
No Kev, a rear end panel is not the group of political guests on question time...........then again.....

Our old 4.3 did that intermittently then just cured itself and it never happened again. Hope you get it sorted anyway

So, took the rear panel off the cubby box. As you said attached to it was the black antenna, no wire comming from it.
Had a ferrit around and found the lead, plugged it in and yes, the starter now works perfectly.
Thanks you very much for your help, I really appreciate it
