So .... "Red Bull's Max Verstappen believes he could win the World Championship if he were driving Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes."
What do you think? If Max was driving instead of Bottas, where would he have finished? Top of the Bunch? 2nd Behind Lewis or 2nd Behind Vettel; 3rd Behind Lewis and Seb or 3rd behind the two Ferraris? or Maybe 4th, Behind Lewis, Seb AND Kimi?
Vote and Comment.

I don't think he would have beaten Lewis in the same car as doesn't have the same racecraft consistently I also don't think he would have beaten Seb Vettel this year as he would not have been able to put the same pressure on Seb that Lewis did and forced error in the same way. I do think he would have finished above Kimi however, so improving on Bottas' position
So I voted 3rd - Behind Lewis and Seb

I suspect that Max in a Merc could have won this year's World Championship but I'm far less confident that he would have. He certainly has the race craft on a good day and in a better car he'd have more good days but, exactly as you say, he isn't [yet] as consistently good as Lewis. On the other hand, he wouldn't be a terribly compliant number two and would have taken far more points from Lewis than Valterri did. So I suspect that the resulting competition could well have gifted the championship to Seb - Max may well have come third, after Seb and Lewis!

If he was driving the Merc he would be overcooking things far too often to either his own or others cost - or both. He's not yet an assertive driver, he's still an arrogant one.

I think you may well be right, in a similar situation to 2008, where Fernando Alsonso OR Lewis Hamilton should have won but their rivalry threw away the WDC from a McLaren car to Kimi R.

As other have said Lewis has years of race craft under his belt whereas Max is stil a bit green behind the ears , he takes unnecessary risks and pisses off other drivers I’m sure he will mellow with age, wonder who he will get a drive with once his contract is up 🤔
So 2nd behind Lewis.

Looks like we're all in sort of agreement, my 2p's worth, with Max in a Mercedes it would have been Seb, Lewis, Max. they would take enough points off each other to allow Seb to win

The article that prompted the initial thread was in the German 'bild' magazine and I haven't read it. I wonder - although seriously doubt it - if Max was saying if he actually was in Lewis Hamiltons Mercedes INSTEAD of Lewis, rather than being in the Mercedes Team as an equal #1 driver. So in other words, if he didn't also have to compete with Lewis as well in equal machinery. (Given his Ego and self-confidence of youth, I really, really, do not think he meant that though, so did not take the wording of the headline as literal)

As reported in Autoweek: "Red Bull Racing F1 driver Max Verstappen says any top driver would have won the 2018 F1 championship in Lewis Hamilton's car" - i.e. the car was the star rather than Lewis - which is not quite complete and utter tosh ... Winning the WDC is really fairly simple: - You need to have the best car - or at least one that is on par with the best across the season
- You need to have the best driver - or at least one that is on par with the best across the season
- You need to have a professional team so as to get the car out onto the track and the strategy correct
- You need to have a decent amount of luck - or at least not too much misfortune during the season
I did say simple rather than easy! Mercedes was the best car this year but the WDC could probably have been won in a Ferrari. Lewis is probably the best driver out there - but there are others who are on or close to par and could have won with the right car, a good team and a decent amount of luck. Max is probably one of them (or could be in the future). As is Vettel. And I do rather wonder whether Alonso could still cut the mustard (with the right car) but I guess we'll never know now ...
