Hi , I am going to view a 2006 D-4D XTR 3Door ,can anyone offer some help on what I need to check ie;if there were any call backs and possible faults and flaws associated with this year/model. I have been looking for a clean low mileage one owner vehicle for a while ,this might be the one !! All knowledge and advice appreciated

Hi Cosy and welcome to the club. Things to check: Listen for any 'knock' on the steering - there was an issue with a joint at the bottom of the column and also top of front struts. Nothing dangerous but can be annoying. Both are fixable [though not cheap] There was a recall for locking tabs on the rear suspension too. Have a look here: rav4driversclub.boards.net/board/15/tsb-recall-informationOne thing to check is the condition of the down pipe from filler cap to tank. It is hidden by a plastic shroud to the front of the nearside wheel arch so can't be seen easily. They corrode if mud and crud has been allowed to build up. Have a good sniff for diesel smell and get a torch under to check for any dripping. May be OK but, if not, about £175 for the part I believe. Have a good long test drive and make sure there is no hesitation or other issues. On return, check for coolant coming out of expansion tank and for any discolouration of coolant - it should be pink. There was an issue of head gasket breakdown on early engines though primarily the T180s See here: rav4driversclub.boards.net/thread/69/charliefarlies-guide-diesel-series-engineCan't think of anything else just now but others may chip in.

If its a 3-door, doesn't that imply that it's a late 4.2 (i.e. 2005 car with the 2.0L diesel engine) rather than an early 4.3 (with the 2.2L diesel engine)? And in which case the cautions raised in charliefarlie's guide don't apply and that's one less thing to be concerned about ...

Both are fixable [though not cheap] Sorry for the hi-jack, ours has just started making this noise, it's not the struts I'm sure as they weren't picked up on MOT, but could be steering Edit:- Bugger I must start searching before posting

Cheers guys ,it is a 2005 model but reg is March 2006 ,it has supposedly done 28,000 miles ,full s/h with original owner . I have not seen any photos of it yet ,only documents ; log book ,service records . I just need to be certain that it’s genuine and sound . I will definitely check all points raised

welcome to the club....👍
If it’s a 2005 then the head gasket shouldn’t be a concern.

Welcome to the Forum There are two things of note come to mind on the RAV4.2 Diesel 1) DMF - unlikely on a car with such low mileage, but worth checking - reversing up a hill can help reveal any issues that don't appear (yet) in normal driving 2) Timing Belt - check it has been done within the last few years at least. Due every 5 (or 6 years)so should have been due twice on a early 2006 car, but the low miles might have made previous owners think it was ok to skip it (it is not!) Have a good look underneath as well. My last experience of a 2005 RAV4 with just 49,000 miles with immaculate bodywork and impeccable service history blinded me to the very poor condition of the under-chassis and corrosion. Did less then 1,000 miles before selling again and cost over £1 a mile in repairs.
