How do you go about checking the filler pipe Jim? The plastic N/S/R wheel arch liner has to come off. It's held on by 4 (or 5 ?) self-tappers and then you have full access to the filler pipe. It can be removed with the wheel in situ but it is easier if you can jack it up, put it on an axle stand and remove the wheel.
If the pipe is sound, just brush away any mud, etc then spray it with ACF-50, Waxoyl/Dinitrol, etc to keep any corrosion at bay. If it's already corroded, you may need to give it a coat of rust converter first but any light corrosion should be dealt with OK by Waxoyl/Dinitrol. Thanks Jim :TU: I will have to have a look. Will the self tappers come out easy or are they usually corroded and need replacing. I was getting whiffs of petrol when I was under there last doing the heat shield I remember??

Give those fixings a soak with penetrating fluid Paul. There's a high likelihood that they are corroded if anything like the 4.3.

I've done a few of them now and the screws always came out a treat. Toyota's fasteners have usually seemed to be good quality right around the car.
But I would agree with Dave that a squirt or two of penetrating fluid would not go amiss.

Do you have to drain the tank to change the filler neck? Noticed we had a small damp patch under the Rav the other day after filling it right up at Costco, the pipe is damp, so assuming that is the issue, new one on order after sitting down & being passed the smelling salts over the cost.

The guy who did mine jacked it up at an alarming angle to avoid draining the tank. If I was going to do the job myself, I'd drain the tank. If it's any consolation the new pipe came with much better protection than the old one which had lasted 10 years.
