Having read Uncle Bobs brilliant post on fitting Cruise Control to his Rav 4.2 auto , I decided to take the plunge after some encouragement from Charlie and purchased a used steering wheel complete with the required cruise control and wiring loom from eBay for the bargain price of £40. I wasn’t sure it would even work , were all the required switches fitted to my car ? This was the purchase. It sat on a shelf for a few weeks until the weather improved and I finally got around to fitting it last weekend. It was a breeze to fit and the icing on the cake was seeing the ‘cruise’ light up on the dash when the end of the stalk was pressed.

I was short of time so I didn’t have time to test it until today, but wow , it works perfectly and is disabled by pressing either the clutch or brake pedal.. What a great mod and alll for just £40...

When I done mine I was very keen to see that green light on the bash ...now we know both auto and manual transmission will work with this upgrade 👍🏻👍🏻

I also bought a steering wheel with switch, but then could not budge the existing steering wheel. So resorted to cutting a hole in my existing steering wheel and moving the switch from the wheel that I bought, not a major job and actually took me less time than I spent trying to get the old wheel off. Dave, I did the same , I only used the parts required from the donor steering wheel.

Jobs a good ‘un, jase!! I think Hoovie used an aftermarket kit for his IIRC. The only annoying thing I find with the cruise control on our 4.2 is when your on the motorway and you want to resume after slowing down it’s not half loud it drops down a gear almost in max revs till it gets to where it needs to be.

I fitted the Toyota one to my 4.2 3 Door Auto and it was a super-simple job as Jase describes (I swapped the entire wheel over when I did mine) I did fit a GoldCruise System to my 4.2 5 Door Manual and that was great (and better than the Toyota System but around 10 times the cost!). I did on the Manual 4.2 have to fit a switch to the clutch pedal though as none was fitted (that I could see anyway). Maybe some have switches as standard fitted or the ECU detects when the clutch is depressed somehow (a raise in engine revs or sudden drop in engine load?) I think a lot of vehicles where Cruise is an option are pretty ready for a factory retro-fit? I added OEM Cruise to my VW T5 by changing the stalk set, but did also have to do some wiring addition to the BM ('Body Management') ECU and a wire through the bulkhead to a connection near the battery. Had to enable it in the ECU as well but no extra electronics were needed. The Toyota add-on is a lot easier
