Well folks Toyota just phoned and have diagnosed that the MAF sensor needs replacing which I said I could do but was told it's not just a matter of swapping over as it needs to be reset so it knows the amount of air passing it and the codes need to be reset? Is this the case as the part itself is expensive but the labour on top is unbelievable considering I took it off and replaced it meself in about half an hour?? Any advice welcome, apart from getting rid of the Rav

Like what BK said. Do it yourself then erase the codes with your new code reader.

Is it that dealer on the hill again ? It is indeed Charlie and after todays quote when we pick the Rav up it'll be the last they see of us, as I phoned a local garage up and was told the sensor would be about £100-120 and half hour to fit and clear any of the codes so about £140 all in but said seeing as how I had took it off meself I could do it then just bring it along for them to clear the codes which would take about a minute?? Toyota quoted £429   Needless to say Mrs P has had enough so looks like it might be going once fixed??

I bought an obdII reader from a nice chap who used it for his Volvo... does other cars too and only cost me £80...and allows me to clear codes if/when they appear.

I have been phoning round the local garages about the MAF and the one told me to disconnect the MAF sensor and see if it runs ok then reconnect it to see if the problems come back Again can/should this be done??

You will have at least one more error code to delete then, Paul, as disconnecting it will throw up a fault. Huvnae a clue urrawise if it will run ok......doubt it.......
Your new code reader and deleter will pay for itself on first use.....LOL....,

I don't wanna spend more money if it is not the MAF or is this a process of elimination??

Question bothering me, Paul.......an inexperienced home mechanic like me suggested WEEKS ago it MIGHT be the MAF sensor. Now suddenly and including a Toyota dealer, everybody is focussed on the MAF Sensor. Did you actually lead the garage to believe you THOUGHT it might be the MAF......? In other words, did you STEER them that way, or did they do a proper diagnosis and the MAF was the culprit.....? My first guess being THIS correct is deffo NOT the norm.

I told them that I had cleaned the MAF sensor as I was told it could've been that by your good self, but I was told that they had spent two hours looking at it, test driving it and putting it on their diags machine and was told the MAF sensor was buggered and needs replacing. A new MAF was £179 the rest labour and VAT. All the garages I have phoned have said that they have never had to re-programme a MAF to test how much air is getting past it, yet Toyota dealer said they had to which was a big part of the quote?? It just didn't ring true to me after what I had read and seen about the MAF on RAV4??

OK.......the pish they are ripping then. I would proceed by buying even a USED one from the many on ebay, cleaning it prior to installation, and go from there. If that cures it, quids in after only a few quids out. If that no worky........goodness knows.
