We have had the eternally running post about "Quality" of diesel, and the conclusion has always been stay away from supermarket "Weasel Pee", and stick with a decent branded fuel.
So what about petrol? Supermarket stuff is going for around 114.9p/L and Shell Fuelsave is 125.9p/L ... I can get Morrisons at 115.9/L and 10p/L off.
So what to do, I know when I had the Daewoo I 'felt' that I got better performance - Picked up better when I pushed the noisy pedal, and around 50 more miles to the tankful than when I used Supermarket fuel ... but is it worth, currently, 20p/L more to use branded fuel??? Especially in view of the fact that I'll be running electric most of the time ... I hope!

I personally will never put supermarket fuel in either of our cars. The wife's IQ gets premium branded fuel, either Shell,BP or occasionally Texaco.

I've never been convinced that's it's better, we ran the MR2 Turbo, Skyline, Imprezza & TT Turbo all mainly on Tesco 'normal' fuel, when I did put in Branded or even Super Branded I could never feel any difference, but I never had to open any of them up to see the insides.

At the risk of restarting the whole debate I don't really agree with the summary of an "eternally running post about "Quality" of diesel, and the conclusion has always been stay away from supermarket "Weasel Pee", and stick with a decent branded fuel" ... all fuel is refined to the same quality and so called 'branded fuel" is of exactly the same underlying quality as that purchased at a supermarket. What varies is the level of additives added to the refined fuel and premium quality fuels - typically from 'branded' outlets - have a 'better' mix of additives.
So, personally, I will endeavour to fill my diesel RAV with premium diesel (typically Shell V-Power) and am happy to pay the premium (well, happiness is relative) but I wouldn't simply use 'branded' fuel in preference to 'unbranded' or supermarket fuel.
The same argument applies to petrol as it does diesel though I'm not aware that petrol engines are quite as sensitive to the differences. Note also that standard petrol has an octane rating of 95 RON while the additives in premium petrol raise this to 99 RON such as you will find in Shell V-Power petrol and Tesco Momentum 99. So, at least one supermarket already sells a competitive premium petrol that is 'better' than standard 'branded' fuel ... setting aside brand loyalties and preferences and any consideration of the potential effects of other additives in terms of cleaner burning of lubrication.
You pays your money ...

Just as a complete aside, I filled the Volvo (diesel) up the other day at Costco on the way home, I'm sure it was 128.99p a litre, took the S-I-L into Sheffield on Saturday to his Christmas works do, so daughter asked me to take her car & fill it up on the way back, it was down to 121.99p 7p reduction in 5 days.

I asked this question on the old forum as Mrs P had got a good discount at the time on the Tesco petrol and the consensus was that there was no difference in the supermarket petrol or the branded types, but Mrs P still puts Shell in when passing a Shell garage :TU:

Both our cars are petrol, use Asda/Morrisons for fuel, but add Millers Eco Max additive, works for us.

I often fill up with Sainsbury's petrol and occasionally with Shell. I have not observed any difference in mpg or performance. A few cars need the extra RON but I have only used it in a Subaru Legacy 3.0R SpecB but that would also run on 95 RON if that was all that was available.

I personally will never put supermarket fuel in either of our cars. The wife's IQ gets premium branded fuel, either Shell,BP or occasionally Texaco. Our 2 IQs get whatever petrol is cheapest ... I then add Millers petrol treatment to the tanks. This is not done often as they run on fumes...... Not sure if I ever mentioned that ? Tony petrol is petrol as far as I’m concerned. I really doubt there is any danger from using the cheapest you can get. I do as above add Millers which works out far less expensive than buying premium petrol. If I were running a big powerful engine I would likely think differently.

Was it Shell Vpower that was supposedly developed with the help of Ferrari? When I get a Ferrari I guess I'll have to use it. In the meantime, there's a label inside the SLK filler cap that says 95 Ron so that's what it gets.

Rav gets asda, it's the cheapest round here. Our slk says 98 ron so either tesco momentum or shell vpower. Usually tesco because it's cheaper but I was told shell has a detergent in it which cleans the injectors so worth sticking a tank of that in every now and then??!!

No supermarkets in my immediate area so it’s BP or Shell 👍🏻👍🏻

Latest price near me for petrol is £1.194 per litre at Sainsbury's and £1.199 per litre at the nearest Shell garage.

If the prices were that close here it would be a no brained, but a 11 to 13p a litre difference is a bit much ... Even when a Sainsbury's and she'll garage are about 300 yards apart!!
