I thought I’d share with the forum my new non-landrover ownership status
It (2002 Discovery) decided to destroy itself. Basically oil light came on, I stopped ASAP and got it transported to my LR chap (as low oil pressure is dead serious) He investigated and found that the “oil pump bolt” (known issue) had come loose and bent and mangled several internal components in the engine! I also had a steering issue (which was going to cost £700) so this was a rather large nail in the coffin. That was my third and final LR and I shall not be having another! Any Disco2 owners out there- you have a “Ticking time bomb” and if you don’t get this checked you could lose your car as easily as that. I don’t expect sympathy, as it’s self inflicted by owning the thing in the first place!

Sorry to hear that Dave. What will you replace it with?

Sorry to hear that Dave. What will you replace it with? Presumably not another LR.
My condolences, Dave. I genuinely am sorry for your loss. Funnily enough my Defender-owning neighbour mentioned that little Disco foilble the last time we spoke.

At lest it was a catastrophic failure and gave you no option to spend a few hundred quid to keep it going , you avatar shows a RAV4 so some comfort there for future reliable motoring 👍🏻

Sorry to hear that Dave. What will you replace it with? Nothing at the mo. Can’t afford it. Only replaced the 57 plate Rav (wrote off by hitting a deer)?with another Rav (62 plate) last Christmas.

Defender share engines with Discos btw! So if he’s got a TD5 he’s just as at risk. Given the choice I’d get a Landcruiser tomorrow!

I keep sneaking a look on AutoTrader for what's currently available although, to be fair, they're way too big for our needs now.

Friend of mine parked his old Disco up 10 years ago as the tin worm, well I suppose in their case ali worm had taken a good chomping. He bought another & the parked up one was supposed to be being chopped up & made into a Dakar kit car. One day a bloke knocked on his door & asked him if he wanted to sell it, so out of curiosity he asked how much & was pleasantly surprised, so he had a minutes think & decided if it hadn't happened in 10 years it's never likely to happen, so he agreed & said when do you want to take it, 'Now' he said trailers outside. So they went to it, got the compressor out & pumped up the tyres, brought his Freelander up to it to jump off, half a dozen spins later it fired up & drove onto the trailer.

Hi Sorry to hear your woes, its a shame when they work they are a good 4x4, I have had a 1997 td3 for the last 4 years and it has been a brilliant workhorse but constant niggaly maintenance, luckily for me superficial things like window mechanisms door locks starter motor etc, and generally trying to stop the rot getting too bad, apparently since Tata took them over the quality control is a lot better. as for mine I managed to get it through the last CT (French MOT) before the new regulations came in, so I hopefully have another 1 1/2 years out of it before it is sold off for parts, but I know it wont get through the next one without doing quite a bit of welding, it is not dangerous as it is all superficial but more than I am prepared to do, on top of that the national speed limit on normal roads in France has dropped to 80kph and the autobox doesn't get into 4th until about 84kph so it can get a bit thirsty unless you edge over the speed limit. Yes, niggly but bountiful. I had; 2 Air bags, pipes and compressor (air suspension) Fuel pump Fuel leak 2 hubs Alarm receiver Another Hub Fuel leak Heating Fan transistor Fuel pressure regulator Alternator Steering pump Fuel leak 2 more hubs Air bags (again) Injector seals All four locks failed one at a time Another fuel leak Steering box And finally “engine”!

Bloody hell, Dave! I've got to say that you must have great perseverance and a forgiving nature. If your LR had been a horse it would have been shot after the second hub (hoof?).

Number one LR was the same (series 3, 1973) I actually spent more time fixing it than driving it Number two was sweet though. 3.5 V8 Rover (1983) in a 110 defender (12 seater!!) No issues with that one (except rear chassis needed replacing!)
Def will not be a number Four

Sorry to hear of your troubles...
I've always liked the design of discovery 2's I've always liked land rover as a brand , I've always secretly wanted one.
I've always loved tinkering with cars , adding bits , lights etc etc.
Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise.

It is a relief not worrying about breaking down all the time! It was a “good” car overalll. Towed brilliantly, very comfy, not quick but very powerful. Pulled quite a few people out of ditches etc over the years with no effort. BUT and it is a big but all that comes at the cost of poor reliability. Disco2’s have a long list of things tat WILL go wrong it’s just of case of when and how many times! Plus side is I have lots of lovely tools and learnt lots of mechanical stuff thanks to AR51 (yes that was really it’s plate!)

All Landrovers ( I had a 108, a 88 a 90 and a Disco 1 ) plus the BMC A series in it's various guises taught me all I don't know about the mechanics of motor vehicles and welding. The 88 in particular seemed to generate a job for every weekend. Have to say though, in twenty years of them I only had two "breakdowns" that resulted in recovery. The first was a spline failure on the input of a Fairy Overdrive unit ( NOT a LR part! ) and the other was an "o" ring failure on the injector pump of the Disco. I don't suppose that I should complain really. The Disco was a joy to drive unless you were in a hurry and it had a love afair with petrol stations. All round, the RAV is the best motor I've ever had but the Disco was the most comfortable.
