RAV4 MK3 xtr auto 2.2. Admittedly I was uncharacteristically driving it fast, well above the legal limit. Warning messages appeared saying check engine system, and check 4 x 4 system. Anyway I slowed down and all seemed fine otherwise. It wasn't until driving on slower roads and changing speed that I noticed that the gear change from first to second was clunky (auto remember), and less clunky from second to third etc. Power also seems to be down when going uphill? I've booked the car in to get checkout and fixed, but that's not for another week unfortunately. Meanwhile, any ideas? How bad could it be? Thanks.

That's not good but difficult to diagnose from a distance. Has the car been serviced regularly and to Toyota schedules? Gearbox oil changed? Mileage?

That's not good but difficult to diagnose from a distance. Has the car been serviced regularly and to Toyota schedules? Gearbox oil changed? Mileage? Regularly serviced by good, local, motor engineers. Mileage is 74,7383.

There used to be a common problem with the Mk3 Ravs where they would light up the dash like a Christmas tree and sometimes drop into limp mode. The problem was the brake light switch more often than not.
We used to do and advise others to disconnect the battery leave for ten minutes and reconnect. It was akin to doing a reboot on a computer or in this case rebooting the cars computers. Doing this can cure or at least clear the problem permanently or sometimes temporarily. But it points us to where the problem stems from…..As above it costs nowt and is worth trying.
The obvious fly in the ointment is the description of the gearbox woes. But back then most of the Mk3s were manual transmission with if I remember correctly only the SR having auto trans.

Dcat refers to the emissions equipment fitted ? My T180 and my current Invincible both have Dcat. Model wise only the SR in facelift form had auto trans. So cars from approximately 2010 on…. Agree with Charlie my mk3 had 3 flashing dash lights, although didn't go into limp mode, brake light switch!! Cured for about £50 was a few years ago though👍Stew

Cured for about £50 was a few years ago though👍Stew Had it on my T180 … All the lights came on and lights that were seemingly irrelevant. So following advice I did the battery reset. All lights then stayed out until about a month later and then it did it again. But this time I had the brake light switch ready so I fitted it and that was the problem cured, I really don’t understand or get on with wiring or electrics. But I do know that the battery reset cures a lot of minor irritations. Why I don’t know but it does and that’s where we need to start before looking elsewhere. 👍👍👍

Ours was a 2012 reg car. I didn’t know that. Some cars through the model range have Dcat, My automatic Invincible has Dcat the manual version doesn't have it. Ive always though that the auto has where the manual doesent because the auto puts out more emissions which the Dcat kit reduces. The manual cars complied to regs without it… My old T180 had the Dcat badges my Invincible doesent.

Update. After leaving the car for six days I started it up and drove it. The aforementioned dash panel warnings came up, but driving it seemed totally normal, no apparent issues. After that first restart, now, not even the warnings come up and it drives totally as normal. I'm thinking maybe it was an injector breakdown due to the high speed that I was doing at the time? Any ideas?
