Betty If you could fill in your vehicle details in your profile that would be helpful to anyone making suggestions and save you repeating them. One thing to note is that it will take about four or five miles for the engine to get to working temperature, longer in winter temps. Has anyone suggested cleaning the EGR? Cleaning the EGR and seeing what’s inside is a very good idea… If it’s blocked or really minging it might lead us down another route. I still have the hoover pipe with the narrow pipe set into the end from my T180 days.. 😳😳 Definitely worth some effort before investing in a new 5th injector. Charlie, is the D-CAT EGR similar to the one that was fitted to my D-4D? I used to clean that about every 18 months, it was a very easy job. Maybe took an hour if you were very diligent about getting every last bit of carbon out of it.

It was not done by Toyota, or a genuine part, but it was a new part, it was a lot of money to have it done by them, for a car not worth alot of money, will get my brother to do the erg this weekend, that's a good shout!

Thinking about the sequence of work surely someone would have cleaned the EGR ? It’s where I and most of us here would start. Anyone getting in deep enough to start changing things like the 5th injector should have and may well have started with the EGR. The EGR is very easy to clean. Whip the top off and if it hadn’t been cleaned it’ll likely be really sooty at best or clogged at worst. You need a good powerful vacuum I use a Henry. Gently lick away at the crud while vaccinng it up with the hoover. I made up a pipe with a very narrow end so as to get as much up it as possible. You can remove the EGR but it’s no real gain. The existing gasket should be fine …

Update, thank you everyone. So the egr was never looked at, the man that diagnosed the 5th is an ex Toyota mechanic and deisel specialist. So no I trust what he said. This weekend my brother finally had time for a play, he cleaned the egr, was sooty, but not horrific by any strech. He changed the 5th for me and cleaned out all relating pipes. And since the mpg had jumped up by 5, and no smoke so far, FINGERS CROSSED because I really love my car

From 2010 onwards those engines were causing more issues than all the rest of the Toyota range put together. Any Toyota tech would know immediately where to start.

He did, 5th injector, the problem was fixed. As a guess something is getting through that's them blocking that up, but I haven't been back to ask him. We did the egr yesterday and it was not bad.
