The only bit I don’t get is how is sand magnetic ? Because it contains a significant amount of an iron ore. To quote: "Magnetite/maghemite is also a common magnetic mineral in NE Saharan dust". That also explains the 'red' colour, and the fact that it looks remarkably like rust! I'm just pleased that it washed off. What I don't understand is how / why it bonds quite so well to the paint surface - you might expect 'sand' to simply brush / rinse off. It blew here, so why doesn't it simply blow away again? Also, the car is normally garaged and we've never noticed a coating of red sand in our part of the world. So it must have got there while she was driving through the rain. Quite why it accumulates only there - I've checked over the rest of the car - is another mystery. Anyhow the job is done now ...

I guess the iron content starts to oxidise when wet which then bonds on to the paint surface. Good job you got it off promptly Philip
