and it's getting worse. Garage says it's the tyres. They are a decade old (hangs head in shame) It is not the wheel bearings they say. Any thoughts about spending over £300 on 4 new tyes for a 19 yo car or could it be something else?

Your tyres are out of date but I think you know that.
A lot depends on how much your 19 year old car is worth. Or how much you value your safety and those who travel in the car. 300 quid is only really going to buy budget tyres anyway......

Have a look at Geolandars. They may be within budget if available in the right size.

I spent ages chasing my tail with excessive road noise, eventually discovered it was tyre noise, a new set of boots sorted it out.

I had this problem with tyre noise, and it is definitely the tyres as i changed their position and the noise went with them. As for spending 300gbp on tyres, i do not look at it like this. It does not matter how much the car is worth, it is how much your life is worth. The tyres is your connection with the road, and it is up to you how good you want it to be. I have the old Corolla, which is 21 years old, yet the tyres i fit to this car are the Michelin cross climate (that is about 75gbp per corner) as i think this is important. I care about myself and the people who drive it, so that is what i have chosen. Tyres are consumables. You di not think that everytime you refuel you put is 1/10 of the value of the car, so why not think of tyres the same?

I would agree with the others and have a decent set of tyres fitted. At the end of the day your safety depends on the condition of your tyres. Last year our 4.2 was pulling and it turned out to be one of the front tyres so had both replaced. There’s some good companies online that will come and fit tyres for you at home too.

Thanks for all the replies that confirm it is the tyres. Avons in 235/60 x 16 are roughly £80 each on blackcircles or etyres. I don't intend keeping it much longer but I have been saying that for a few years!

Not what your asking but I had two brands of tyre on my last blue 3 door , and it drove like I was on ice ! Put a set of Avon’s on it and transformed the Rav totally. Get yourself a set of mid budget tyres. What size are you running 235/60/16 ?

Got general grabbers on it atm and have always been concerned about the performance in low temperatures.

OK what next? £300+ on tyres but still doing it. My thoughts are now auxiliary belt and get all the transmission oil changed. It's like a droning noise. I noticed that it changes slightly when the wheel is turned so that got me thinking about the belt because of the power steering pump.
