I took my Corsa for its 2nd MOT today (4 years old) and it failed on brakes
I've hardly use the car in the last year so not really picked up on any issues as any journey has been so short hard to notice if anything untoward.
Also I don't tend to use the brakes very much as there is so little traffic on the road and I don't tend to tear around the roads (drive like a granny!).
Car has done a total of 18,500 miles from new.
So the failure:
Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Front Service brake excessively fluctuating (1.2.1 (e))
Offside Front Service brake excessively fluctuating (1.2.1 (e))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Nearside Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))
Offside Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))
The guy at the dealer said new discs and pads and the testers use special gauge to check what is left (?)
Now the discs are just an advisory, not a fail.
I looked at the pads when I got home and there is loads of meat on them I reckon - there is a wear prong on the pads and that prong is nowhere close to the disc.
The question...
the fail "... Front Service brake excessively fluctuating". Is this essentially saying the discs are warped? the discs look ok to me visually and not worn, pitted or scored - however what I forgot to do is drive like a nutter too much to the garage pre-MOT (but harder than usual) so maybe the surface didn't clean up very much? But the edges do look a bit 'crumbly' if you get my meaning?
What would be your recommendations? swap out the discs and pads? I was thinking just pads until I went to check and found they looked fine, so got to be discs? and new discs will mean new pads recommended as well.
Could it be anything else?
If so, Which Brands? got 16" wheels and discs are vented, so on that basis ....
Looking at ECP and for discs bosch are £79, as are Pagid. Eicher are £55 (price per disc)
For Pads, Pagid are £75 and Brembo are £64
