As a very proud tradesman of many years I get the point about telling a garage or a mechanic what needs doing.
But we live in a world where I at least keep my eyes open. Having a decent diagnostic tool allows and helps me to do just that.
If I detected a fault on a car that was beyond my competence and/or comfort zone then the car goes to either DNA or a more local Audi VW independent. Niether would dream of questioning what I want done. But then niether would dream of charging me the typical main dealer diagnosis charge either. They’re just simply not like that.
Some may consider 500 nicker on a diagnostics box a waste. But I don’t drink or smoke so if I waste a bit on tools and believe me I have then that’s tough titty on me.
The limitations of my kit is me. How I wish I had some of the knowledge young Andy has. To be honest I’d be chuffed if I could even understand some of the more technical stuff.... But these readers tell me what’s up. It tells me in words as well as giving me a code. The code is never looked at I read the words.
Some garages main dealers of course don’t want us to have diagnostics.. It means they can’t rob us. When I had an Audi some years back I took it in to have an ABS sensor changed. They insisted I would have to pay 65 quid diagnostics on top of the extortionate cost of swapping the ABS sensor. I refused and told the service manager the car was being PXed into them as soon as my new car arrived. Still he stood his ground. So I walked out and fixed the damn thing myself. Oh and I cancelled my new car as I couldn’t be dealing with crap like that.

No idea if it's any good but Aldi have OBD II readers in stock just now. £40. I was tempted, but didn't in the end.

We shop for veg and stuff but not electronics. One of the points I made badly above is the Autel range of devices which goes from basic to fairly comprehensive is well worth a look at. 👍👍

No silver ID plate on the back ...long since packed up 🙄

If buying off Ebay or Amazon you can check and if it’s hooky you get your money back 👍

Now they moved to their own brand which is more expensive and of lower quality. The advantage with them eas 3 years warranty, so if the tool packed up before, you got the job done and your money back. I cannot justify professional tools for my DIY work.

For some kit Aldi is very good and they don't quibble if you have to take something back under the warranty. They are seldom on a par with known brands but sometimes they can surprise you. I bought a powerpack from them which was very good and half the price of a mainstream brand. I would still be using it if some lowlife hadn't burgled our garage a couple of years back. 😡
