I fitted a Kenwood DNX8170DABS to the RV and need to do an update on the firmware and the nav. As I have free updates on other Garmin units, can I use the latest of those to update the Kenwood without having to pay Garmin for the Kenwood update. Doing it is another matter and the process looks like a total nightmare to computer dummy like me!!

E Hi Ainsley, I've a DNX8160DABS in the RAV and I have to admit that doing updates is a bit fraught at times. HOWEVER IMHO Kenwood have one of the best customer service desks in the world and they have provided me with crib sheets and talked me through the process a couple of times. If yours is like mine you need a full sized 32Gb SD card to do the update and it is definitely worth updating the firmware first. Did you get 3 years free updates to the mapping when you bought the Kenwood?

No Chris, I got the Kenwood second hand but it is just coming up to 3 years old now, but I don't know if I qualify for the free updates as a second owner. Will certainly try the customer service tomorrow.

Have you got a manual for it Ainsley?

It's all becoming a nightmare! The firmware update has to be done using windows, and I now have that on the USB and it seems to be OK. However when I plug the USB into the Kenwood lead, nothing happens on the screen, and although the USB is flashing blue, which should indicate that it is connected, there is no confirmation message, and no "yes"to start the update. I have been in contact with Kenwood, but the last 3 messages have not had a reply, and there is no phone number to call. Tearing what's left of my hair out!!
