It would also account for the front units ( nearly vertical ) seeming to last a lot longer that the rears. Well in my experience they seem to! Touch of double standards..... under Toyota warranty fit individually, when the customer is paying only fit as a pair 🧐 Within reason most things that have limited life and are in pairs should be changed as pairs, unless it is obvious that it was an unusual component failure. in the case of shocks you don't want the car to feel different depending on whether you are going round a left or right handed corner, and the component cost isn't very high anyway
