After hoovering and cleaning the Rav today, I took it for a spin via the shop for a few essentials, the Check Engine System warning light came on and flicks between the that and the Check 4x4 System warning light. The engine light is illuminated on the dash with the triangle with the exclamation mark and the car with the skid marks behind it is also illuminated.
I'll obviously stop driving it for now.
Any ideas what the problem could be ?

As has been said what feels like ad-infinitum, fault code needs to be read.
"Check 4x4" can be displayed in a whole load of different "fault" conditions, due to ECU/system interdependency.

Could even be down to the battery going a bit low.

The first time I had the same warning I disconnected the battery and left it for about half hour and when reconnected it had reset the light. It still came back on though a few days later but your better off finding out what code is stored so you can find the fault. As Charlie said could be just due to a low battery. Mike turned out to be the EGR valve once it was removed and cleaned it was fine never came back on again. I’m not sure who has it at the moment but you can borrow the OBD reader to read what code is stored if you don’t have one to hand.

Thanks, I do have a OBD reader, rummaging in the shed for it now (Heaven knows why I never kept it in the boot).
Once I find it and get the code, I'll post it here for further help.
Cheers

Found my OBD.
Two codes found, but it's not listed them in the usual way.
Shows:
7E8: Engine 7E9: A/T
I have erased the codes and has cleared the dashboard lights etc.
Will take it for a drive now and see what happens.

Those are 11 bit CAN message IDs for OBD2 CAN response messages, not the stored fault codes. (Yeah, it's technical, most people will go -> Eh?)

Before when I used this on the Rav it would show a code like P004 or something.
Are these codes completely different or maybe I've changed a setting on the reader I have ?

This is what popped up on my first Google search
Answers. Your $7E8 and the $7E9 are fuel/ air intake codes, as for the P1326 Ok, this code is set when the knock sensor detects vibrations from engine rod knock, however, it may be set falsely due to incorrect knock sensor logic programming in the engine control module. .

At a very low level in the OBD-2 communication process, (which a user of a reader wouldn't normally see), the message structure is of the form: (see OBD2 PIDs & Messages Explained) in the link below: www.csselectronics.com/screen/page/simple-intro-obd2-explained/language/enTo read "DTCs" mode 3 (or service 3) is requested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD-II_PIDs#Service_03_(no_PID_required)obdcon.sourceforge.net/2010/06/obd-ii-pids/0x7E8 and 0x7E9 are very, very likely the CAN message IDs that engine management and transmission ECUs are returning the DTCs on, when a CAN message ID of 0x7DF, mode 3 was sent from the code reader (which requests DTCs). I suspect that there were sub-menus, or lists, or something similar, under each of those 7E8 and 7E9 ID on the code reader, which would display the more familiar "P" codes. Basically, I suspect it was saying it had received codes from EMS and transmission, which we already knew from the instrument pack. ....again many will wonder what the heck I'm going on about..............

So basically those codes are saying, 'you have mail' and to read it you need to open the mailbox.

That's a very good way of putting it. Unfortunately, we've emptied the mail into the bin, before we've read it. If it's very important, maybe it will be prepared for mailing again.

Funny you say that, I'm pretty certain I scrolled down and hit enter on each code and there was nothing !! I have used this reader before.
I'll wait to see if they come up again and be sure to look at them carefully.
If they don't come back again, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing !!
