Hi all recently bought a 2012 RAV4 2.2 diesel 1 owner full Toyota history 87000 miles ,really happy but just think there is a lot of turbo whistle compared to my old 320d is this normal on the rav or is my turbo on the way out ?does the rav suffer with turbos?I've changed oil air filter just done rear diff oil and breather,but turbo whistle is a bit unnerving had a quick look under bonnet all pipe work seems ok it's always whistled, I know all turbos do some louder than others but it's like driving a skyline!its definitely not a siren sound like when a turbo has blown hasn't lost any performance just seems excessive I've read somewhere a failing altanator can make a similar sound?used a good c3 5w/30 Castrol oil for change any thoughts?

Are you certain it is the turbo?
Serpentine belt tensioner can also whistle a bit at high mileage.

If you are not sure where the whistle is coming from, you could try the screwdriver test. Get a long screwdriver or a tommy bar, hold one end to your ear and place the other end against the alternator or whichever ancillary bit of kit that you want to test. The bar will act like a stethoscope and amplify any noises being made by the unit.
Just make sure that there are no bits of clothing dangling near the serpentine belt, etc!😣

Hi and :welcome: . Are you certain it is the turbo? Serpentine belt tensioner can also whistle a bit at high mileage. surly a turbo would only whistle when it kicks in over a certain rpm, but a belt would whistle all the time, although maybe quieter at low revs. |

Anyone else had a whistling turbo before 100.000 MLS how do these VB turbos last wondering if poor oil feed would using a c3 5w/30 over a 0w oil reduce oil feed?

Also just added a bottle of forte turbo cleaner to a tank to see if this helps
