This morning when i started the car i heard a beep following the initial check symbol. Check 4x4 system lights up and then engine management system. they alternate. the traction off symbol on the right hand side is lit up as is the engine block symbol on the left. vehicle seems to drive normally ,maybe missing a little grunt. difficult to tell in all the traffic . i rang my local dealer who tell me that although 4x4 may light up the display it doesn't mean that is the source of the problem. i have booked it in for Friday morning. Any ideas?. Cheers Bob

Any ideas?. Cheers Bob So today i took car to the local dealer. i had a call to say that the DPF was the problem and was given a couple of options . 1. for me to take the car for a drive to get it properly hot to get a regen. 2. that they could do a regen for me. I drove straight for the M25 for my "italian tuning" to find there was lanes closed due to an accident, ( friday evening chaos) so i went home!. i will try again Saturday . I'm conscious that i do a few short journeys taking she who must be obeyed to work locally daily . Once a week going a bit further. Every 2 weeks i get a longer run out doing a 2 hour return journey to Reading, which is mainly M way. car now has 60k on the clock . I've owned it since it was eighteen months old and always used Shell V power. Cheers Bob.

Your travel profile doesn't sound unreasonable in terms of keeping the DPF healthy. I have always understood that if you aren't doing regular longish journeys then a fast (m-way) blast of 50+ miles every couple of weeks should suffice. A 2 hour motorway run would be at least 120+ miles and that's 2 x per month.

( just completed a course so very aware ) but its a proper run out.

Lights all still on. so i don't know what to expect. will there be some sign that its cleared. will the lights all go off on there own?. there is no current decrease in performance. Dealer reckons DPF, what symptoms would EGR give.

When the EGR played up it was running a little rough and the same lights came on. I couldn’t clean it out myself so my neighbour did it for me and it wasn’t that hard at all. Some of the more mechanical minded guys on here could probably better advise than me to be honest

Hi Bob, have you got access to an OBC Fault Reader? no i haven't. just relying on what my dealer tells me. AFAIK, the EML warning (the orange engine block symbol) normally needs to be turned off, usually with an OBD reader or by the dealer (using his very flash OBD reader at extortionate cost!). You can pick up inexpensive OBD readers that will also erase any error codes thereby turning off the EML on the internet.
I've got one of these:
which is fine for reading generic codes and erasing them once cleared.

The same as mine Jim! I suspect that clearing the codes is the next essential step. It may have been cured by the de-coke or it might need some more of the same treatment - but we won't know until the codes are cleared.
Bob, using one of these things is dead easy and you can't do any damage ( AFAIK! ) by using it.

Not STRICTLY true, Chris......one needs to make absolutely sure that ignition is AFF whilst plugging in and/or removing OBD Readificators.

I have to say that I've never tried it any other way on the RAV but my brothers Subaru dosen't seem fussed about what you do when plugging in or disconnecting - BUT I did wince the first time I saw him do it
