I would have thought that if the car starts and the headlights work then the battery leads and clamps should be ok. The other circuits that aren't working need to have their fusable links and fuses checked. Unless there has been a massive overload, there is unlikely to be any physical evidence apparent on the fuses or links themselves. You will need to check across the links or fuses with a multimeter or a test lamp to determine if there is a complete circuit. If not then replace the link or the fuse My mechy mate popped in this afternoon and he had a look saying that the alternator has packed up and not to mess with any fuses until the new alternator has been fitted as this could be the cause of the other leccy failure so will leave alone until then Ah. Misunderstood you, Paul. I thought that you had the new alternator fitted already.

Had the alternator delivered earlier today so great service from West Lancs auto electrics as I only ordered it late Monday. This is brand new and comes with an 18 month warranty, I just hope it lasts a lot longer than 18 months. Just gotta get it fitted now. How easy or difficult is it to fit? I've looked at a couple of YouTube vids and seems manageable?

Presume you are changing the belt at same time Paul.....? And naw…..do not attempt it yourself.....takes a load of leverage to get that belt on. Watched Don and Andy do wife's after I showed them what to do.....not easy with one body.

Watched Don and Andy do wife's after I showed them what to do.....not easy with one body. Belt was changed not long ago Kev so that can stay. Brothers been round and had a look, disconnected the leads to the alt so just need the long flat bar socket to do the tensioner which he's gonna do tomorrow, so hopefully all will be ok?? The video I watched had the tensioner near the top but this one is down the bottom!!

Can anyone confirm that the tens pointed by the red line is the tensioner to release the auxillary belt as from what I have seen on line it is a different nut??

Alternator and new battery now fitted, only took about forty minutes, but still no life on the dash or anywhere else, so got an auto electrician out now looking at it. Fingys crossed.

Well folks the sparkies been and sorted the problem and it is the same problem as Jase had and he's done the same repair as what Jase did until I can source a replacement. So does anyone know if these battery fuse boxes are the same on most models, ie petrol and diesel, and what years?? At least the alternator is done and the power steering seems a lot lighter which the sparky put down to the new alternator??

It's hydraulic on the 4.2 not electric. The serpentine belt drives the PS pump however so maybe the belt was slipping a bit before and now the tension is correct?

Hi Paul , yes it lasted ok.. Took the Rav out yesterday for the first time and all is fine again. Don't know why but engine seems smoother and quieter and Mrs P said the steering is lighter?? I've ordered a new part from Kingo so should get that fitted some time in the week.
