When I queried the schedule for serpentine belt I was told 'as required' i.e if no obvious signs of deterioration, no need to change............

The Saab service schedule says to replace the serpentine belt at 60k miles or 6 years.
The belt on our first 4.2 snapped at about 70k miles when it was 9 years old, I think. It was a full recovery job via Club Toyota as the belt is apparently a VOR part not kept in dealer stock. Real hassle although CT did very well organising a courtesy car and getting the RAV back on the road in a couple of days. Nevertheless the experience has led me to have the belt changed at the first service after I buy a used RAV unless the service history shows a recent replacement. Our current RAV was serviced by the Toyota dealer in Honiton when we bought it and they replaced the serpentine belt then.

Number should start with 6PK followed by a 4 digit number this is also the length of the belt 👍🏻

This is of course no substitute for marking/locking everything in the correct place as well, I guess it also depends on what the access us like, with limited access it would be difficult to successfully cut the old belt lengthways. Has anyone ever tried this? Or is the opinion that it is not a good idea? Dave

OK, so I'm confused ... which isn't too difficult these days ... Roger has a 2011 2.2 diesel - which is essentially the same engine as mine so the service schedules should be the same. Mine has a timing belt that is due to be changed at 100,000 miles or 10 years whichever comes sooner. The multi V-belt tension and condition gets inspected after 60,000 miles or 6 years and thereafter every 10,000 miles or annually - with no defined schedule for replacement. As far as I am aware, the timing belt does timing and the V-belt simply transfers power to ancillary components ... not so?
